Entrepreneurs: Catch Up With Facebook Timeline Changes For Your Business Pages

Just when you've mastered Facebook business pages, the popular social network decides to implement the Timeline feature rolled out first on individuals, and now businesses. The first thing you'll notice is the loss of tabs, along with an entirely new interface. If you already have Facebook Timeline on your individual profile, you're at least partially prepared. Honestly, it is difficult to tell the difference between personal and business pages now. But with a few preparations, you can catch up and ensure your small business page, or pages, look amazing.

Where Are Tabs And Apps

Before, a business page featured tabs and apps on the left side of the page. Now, you'll find them at the top of your page under your cover image. The benefit is each tab/app will have a distinctive image associated with it, making it easy for fans to see it. The problem is you're limited to only four at a time. While you can have up to twelve, only four are immediately visible. Choose which apps are in your top four wisely.

Sticky Posts

If you're familiar with forums, you already know what a sticky post is. With Timeline, you can now pin or sticky specific posts on your business page. Instead of being lost among your other posts, these will remain on top and span the entire width of your page. This is perfect for major announcements, contests and other important information you want to ensure your fans see. Some entrepreneurs are choosing to use a pinned post to help fans navigate to the correct tabs and apps. Carefully select your most important information for these posts, though.

Receive Private Messages

Regular business pages previously had one major limitation. There was no way to privately contact the page admin. Now instead of posting on your page, fans can send the page admin (the entrepreneur) a private message. This is perfect for dealing with negative feedback, or fan questions, which may not be appropriate for public posts. While some have dreaded this, others are ready to enjoy this new level of flexibility, and use it to provide improved customer service.

Cover Images

While the cover image may seem like the perfect place for a call to action, Facebook Timeline forbids anything other than an image. There should be no references to liking, contests, purchases or other interactive information. Instead, use this image to set your page apart from personal profiles. Show your small business logo or an image of you at work. Make it fun and professional for best results. And do try to make it standout, with a unique concept or design. Make it memorable and pertinent to your brand.
